The Stick is a tool like any other and can have a significant role to play in your self defense. Unlike other tools that can be used as a weapon such as a firearm or knife, the stick in the form of a cane or walking stick can be carried virtually everywhere - including an airport, bank and federal buildings.
In centuries past the walking stick was a constant companion for those out for walks or on travels. Today, we have an opportunity to re-adopt this trait of our forefathers to help keep us safe.
There is an old adage that says " beware the old man with the stick". While there is some gender and age bias here, the sentiment is one that holds true. A stick can be a good companion in our ever changing world.

Paul Koontz is currently writing a series of manuals on using a walking stick as a self defense tool. The information in these manuals follows the training of the classes and is based on Paul's decades of martial arts training and full contact stick fighting. Paul also makes hand made wooden walking canes that make excellent self defense tools.
Now Available! Basic Walking Stick for Self Defense Manual
Practical Walking Canes , Made by Paul Koontz, NOW IN STOCK!
We teach classes in the use of a stick as a self defense tool and as a fighting weapon. When we say stick, we mean a walking stick, cane, or even a broken length of wood. Our principle is to learn through combat and practice, and to use heavy impact (ballistic impact) to destroy an assailants ability to continue the attack.
Our training is realistic, though we do use padding and protective gear to help stop injuries during classes. At advanced stages the students will fight with hard sticks and protective equipment. These classes are limited to adults 18 years of age.

Within the training a student will find basic striking techniques, power development, footwork training, and general self defense skills such as kicking and punching. The Stick training has elements of european and asian sword training, escrima, Pierre Vigney and A.C. Cunninghams walking cane skills, and a stout helping of common sense skills. What you will not find in our training are skills that are impratical or difficult to use in a real setting. We do not focus on disarming an opponent, no difficult locks, and no techniques that look good but can't work in a real fight. The power of this training is in its simple ,intuitive , practical application. If you want to learn a useless form we are not your school. But if you want to learn how to fight with a stick, come and train.
Stick fighting classes are held Sunday 6-8pm and Wednesday 7-8pm. Cost is $60 per month plus stick and protective gear. Contact Paul for more details.
