FAQ -Frequently asked questions
These are a few questions that I have been asked over the years. I hope they will help in your understanding of Commonwealth Kung Fu.
Public class membership fees are $50.00 per month. This covers as many or as few classes as you would like to attend in a given month. Public classes are not charged by the lesson, only the monthly fee. Months can be prorated under special circumstances. Membership fees are to be paid at the beginning of each training month, prior to the first class of the training month.
Single public class fee is $15 per hour/class.
Private classes begin at $25.00 per hour/class. Private classes are tailored to your specific needs and are scheduled for your convenience.
There are no testing fees, no association dues, no contracts. Annual and long term rates are available.
No. Many Kung Fu schools have adopted a belt ranking system like the Japanese styles. However, Commonwealth Kung Fu has only two ranks, teacher and student. Knowledge means more than rank.
There are no age limitations. So long as the student has the motor skills to perform the training techniques they can study. My youngest student to date has been 7 years old, and my oldest was 73.
All martial arts are great! Some styles do not fit some people. Finding the right one for you is what is important!
Both Bagua and Xingyi are martial arts that fall in the Nei Jia martial arts family, or internal arts. Don't let this name fool you, they are highly evolved and effective martial arts.
BaGua Zhang, or 8 trigrams palm, is based on controlling circular movements. Xing Yi Quan is based on hard, directed, linear movements. The basic training for both are linked, and together are arts unto themselves. Each contain Qi Gong, chin na and fighting applications, skills training and forms. Both are stand alone systems that compliment the other.
Perhaps. The rate at which you advance is based on the rate at which you learn!
Yes. Kung fu can help get you back in good physical shape, or develop enhanced physical fitness. No matter the level of your physcial shape, Commonwealth Kung Fu can help.
Yes. Always consult a physician prior to any new exercise training program. There is something for almost everyone who is willing to learn here.

Yes. If a student has a desire to compete then every step will be taken to assist the student towards success in excellence. No student will be required to compete at any level.
We call the school Commonwealth Kung Fu for two reasons. The first is that we live in the Commonwealth of Kentucky. The second refers to the commonly shared knowledge and techniques within the martial arts. While we study specific chinese martial arts, we are not afraid to look to other arts for their benefits and theories as well. We are all part of one large Martial Arts community and should share information and knowledge freely. No matter the martial art, it has great ideas, concepts and techniques. So, why should a student be closed to the wealth of new ideas that can come from looking at what other martial arts have in common or have that is totally unique?
As part of this idea, Sifu Paul regularly travels to teach seminars to other schools, and to trade knowledge with other instructors. Several times each year instructors from other schools are brought in to share their theories and techniques with us.
